Lumad and Community Educators: Free Our Teachers on World Teachers Day!

Today, as the world commemorates  the world teachers day, Lumad school teachers and members of the Association of Community Educators, strongly demand the immediate release of Lumad school teacher and personnel Amelia B. Pond and Agriculturist Dominiciano Muya.

Pond is  a teacher and researcher  of Salugpongan  Learning Center  was illegally arrested last August 19, 2016 in Cebu City by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group operatives. She is charged with the trumped-up cases of murder/frustrated murder. She was arrested by  the CIDG by  alleging that she is a certain “Adelfa Toledo”.

Pond is the Regional Coordinator of the Rural Missionaries of the Philippines (RMP) and a researcher of Salugpongan Ta’ Tanu Igkanogon Community Learning Center (STTICLC) and is also an active member of ACE and actively participates in all activities which promotes community educators’ rights and welfare.

Teacher Amy, has long been committed in the campaign for Education For All (EFA) and Indigenous People’s Education (IPEd).

Meanwhile, Dominiciano Muya is a volunteer agriculturist of Rural Missionaries of the Philippines and he used to teach agriculture as an elective for Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) in Salugpongan Learning Center. He was arrested in October 17, 2016 under false criminal charges and is now detained for two (2) years in the BJMP in Malaybalay, Bukidnon.

The illegal arrest and detention of Pond and Muya is clearly a manifestation of the continuing harassment against lumad community schools’ personnel, which seems to be a systematic effort to shut down the schools and to attack people committed to serve the lumad children.

These attacks on lumad school personnel is a shame to the 5th year commemoration of the Department of Education Order no. 62 s2011 which stipulates the Adoption of the Indigenous People’s Education Policy  Framework  which supposed objective is to advance IP right to Education.

In this light, we members of ACE reiterate our Call for the immediate release of teacher Amelia Pond and Agriculturist Dominiciano Muya.  We also strengthen our call to stop Human Rights Violation among Community teachers of lumad schools whose sacrifices are immeasurable and lives our offered to defend the right to education of our lumad children.

We also call on the Department of Education especially the Indigenous People’s Education Office (IPSEO) to act to protect the lumad and community school personnel.

Lastly, we ask for the intervention of President Rodrigo R. Duterte on this matter as he has committed to work for the welfare of the lumads in their right to education and to just peace in their ancestral communities.
