For second straight year, Lumad students finish schools in Haran

For the second straight year, Lumad students got to finish one school year in the evacuation center in UCCP Haran.

Some 56 Lumad students, mostly from Kapalong, finished pre-school to grade six levels, and held a moving up ceremony Friday at the University of Immaculate Conception grounds, one of the schools supporting the Lumad evacuees.

“This is now our second graduation here in the evacuation center,” said Ricky Balilid, a lumad teacher of Misfi Academy.  He reiterated the call of the Lumads to pull out military troops and arrest paramilitary members who have caused their displacement for them to be able to go home.

Balilid said the children longed to go home since their parents have went home earlier this year through the Save Our Schools, PASAKA and Department of Social Welfare and Development, yet they opted to stay as school teachers have been targeted by the paramilitary Alamara.

Actress Jodi Sta. Maria visits lumads in Haran

IT WAS not the first time that the Lumads at UCCP Haran Center was visited by a star.

Still, many of them were star-struck when Jodi Sta. Maria (or more known with her screen name as “Amor Powers” in one of her teleseryes) walked in with a smile for everyone.

She also visited the children in their makeshift classrooms, and personally gave them bags and school supplies.

“Huwag niyong hayaan na makuha ‘yung pag-asa na nasa puso ninyo, yong pangarap na isang araw babalik kayo sa lupa ninyo. ‘yun ang huwag niyong i-give up (Don’t let them take the hope in your heart that one day you will be back to your land, never give it up),” was Ms. Jodi’s inspiring message to the Lumad kids.

Lumad school teachers ready for opening of classes

Teachers of heavily militarized IP community schools in Southern Mindanao are ready for the start of school year 2016 despite which may face the last wave of military operation of the Aquino administration’s Oplan Bayanihan.

According to the spokesperson of Save Our Schools Network, Rius Valle, about 169 teachers were sent off to 67 IP schools from Salugpongan Community Learning Center and Mindanao Interfaith Services Foundation, Inc.
